Artist Bio

My name is Scott Downs. I am a resident of Gilroy after living in Los Gatos for over 50 years. I graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Fine Arts having chosen an emphasis in painting and printmaking. Most of my career was spent as a high school art teacher in San Diego, Saratoga High School and included 23 years as the Art Department Chair at Los Gatos High School. During that time and continuing to the present, I have judged numerous art shows and served as a guest instructor at several schools.

Due to my busy teaching and coaching schedule while raising my family, I was unable to devote time to my own work beyond classroom demonstrations, though some of those demonstrations were juried into shows and some have been sold. However, since retiring in 2013, I have finally been able to enjoy the process of drawing, painting, showing and selling my work.

My subject matter is mostly landscape, seascape, still life and the human figure. I work primarily, in oils, acrylics, and watercolor, but I do have a number of pieces in pen and ink, pencil, conte’ and intaglio etching. I have also painted sports themes and designed numerous t-shirt designs as well as a children’s book, which is in the process of being published.

I hope you enjoy my work. Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing any of the pieces you have seen here.
